Philharmonia Virtuosi New York directed by Bernd Ruf

German composer, Gregor Hubner, and Danish composer, Sonia Jacobsen, both lived and worked in New York and these four first-recordings are linked by New York's history. This is new music in terms of its experimental nature, incorporating improvised passages. The CD begins with Piazzolla's well-known piece for viola and piano in a new orchestration which does full justice to the hidden orchestral structures of the original.

David Schrader (fortepiano)

The Chicago-born multifaceted David Schrader is well known in the city for his performances of baroque and classical repertoire on harpsichord, organ and fortepiano. There is considerable evidence that Scarlatti knew and liked the piano and here Schrader plays a modern copy of an instrument from Scarlatti's time (a 1726 piano by Bartolomeo Cristofori) presented in Cedille's usual high quality sound recording.

Stefano Grondona (guitar)

This unique recital is played on a guitar constructed around 1886 by the Spanish guitar maker, Antonio de Torres (1819-1892), celebrated for his innovations which enriched the sound quality of his guitars. Stefano Grondona was born in Genoa in 1958 and has won most of the world's leading guitar competitions. He currently teaches guitar at the conservatory in Vicenza.

Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca

This latest release from the period-instrument group Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca, following their highly successful European tour with Cecilia Bartoli, features chamber music for strings by seven lesser-known Venetian composers who were very much influenced by Gabrieli who had died in 1612.

Anthony Jennings (harpsichord)

This latest release from the New Zealand harpsichordist, Anthony Jennings, who died tragically at the age of 50 in July 1995 is of keyboard works either written or transcribed by J S Bach. Jennings plays a reproduction by Alastair McAllister of a 1728 harpsichord of Christian Zell.

Michael Houstoun (piano)

New Zealand pianist, Michael Houstoun, follows his Morrison & Co Trust recordings of Beethoven sonatas with this fine Liszt recital. All of the works were used in a TV documentary "Icon in b minor" presented by Michael Houstoun in 1996. He was born in Timaru on the South Island of New Zealand in 1952 and has been a prize winner in the 1973 Van Cliburn and 1974 Leeds competitions.
