| We
are frequently asked for recommendations of recordings
which have outstanding sound quality and we are pleased
to give the following list of some of our personal
favourite classical recordings on compact disc. We hesitate to use the word "audiophile" as this too often conjures up a picture of wonderful recordings of totally uninspired performances of uninteresting music. All of the following discs have superb performances of their type and feature recordings, both analogue and digital, dating from 1954 to 2003. |
All
are most natural sounding recordings and the same recording venues, such
as Watford and Walthamstow Town Halls, Kingsway Hall, Troy Savings Bank,
Geneva's Victoria Hall, etc., with the same recording engineers, frequently
appear on the list. It is no accident that the names Kenneth Wilkinson,
Douglas Larter, Lewis Layton, Jean-Martial Golaz, Robert von Bahr and Tony
Faulkner turn up so frequently.
These recordings will certainly give your stereo system a thorough check out and will highlight the good and not so good points. Some of the earlier recordings ,in particular, are unforgiving of unbalanced systems. |
ARNOLD: English, Scottish, Irish and Cornish Dances - London Philharmonic Orch./ Malcolm Arnold - Lyrita SRCD201
Our favourite orchestral recording and our "Desert Island" choice, made by Decca with engineer Kenneth Wilkinson in Watford Town Hall. Without reading the sleeve note, try to spot the original analogue-recorded tracks from 1979 and the digitally-recorded tracks added for the 1990 CD release. A perfect demonstration to those who are certain that digital is better than analogue; and vice versa!
ARNOLD: Overtures- London Philharmonic Orch./Malcolm Arnold - Reference RR48CD
A splendidly natural recording from Prof. Johnson in Watford Town Hall and one of Malcolm Arnold's last conducting assignments.
ARNOLD: Symphony No.3; VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Sym. No.9 - London Philharmonic Orch./ Malcolm Arnold/ Sir Adrian Boult - was Everest EVC9001
Classic Bert Whyte recordings from 1959 and 1958 respectively, made in the Walthamstow Assembly Rooms and totally belying their age. The Vaughan Williams was recorded shortly after the composer's death and completed Boult's first cycle of the symphonies - the others being recorded for Decca. Unfortunately now unavailable - the Vaughan Williams can still be had in the Decca symphony set - 4732412.
| BANTOCK: Hebridean and
Celtic Symphonies - Royal Philharmonic Orch./ Vernon
Handley - Hyperion CDA66450 BANTOCK: Pagan Symphony; Fifine at the Fair - Royal Philharmonic Orch./ Vernon Handley - Hyperion CDA66630 BANTOCK: Cyprian Goddess, Helena, Dante & Beatrice - Royal Philharmonic Orch./ Vernon Handley - Hyperion CDA66810 BANTOCK: Sappho, Sapphic Poem - Susan Bickley/ Julian Lloyd-Webber/ Royal Philharmonic Orch./ Vernon Handley - Hyperion CDA66899 |
Four excellent Tony Faulkner recordings made between 1992 and 1997.
BARTOK: Concerto for Orchestra; Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta; Hungarian Sketches - Chicago Symphony Orch./ Fritz Reiner - RCA 0902661504-2
Legendary "Living Stereo" recordings made by Lewis Layton in 1955 and 1958.
BARTOK: Bluebeard's Castle - Christa Ludwig/ Walter Berry/ London Symphony Orch./ Istvan Kertesz - Decca 4663772
Classic Kenneth Wilkinson recording from the Kingsway Hall in Decca's "The Classic Sound" series.
BEETHOVEN: Symphony No.9 - Nordmo-Lovberg, Ludwig, Kmennt, Hotter, Philharmonia Chorus and Orchestra, Otto Klemperer - Testament SBT1177
Extraordinary that this wonderful live recording from 1957 had to wait so long for issue. An incredibly realistic recording of this Royal Festival Hall concert made by EMI engineers. Definitely one for lovers of the timps. - not obviously due to close miking! Only the rather congested string sound precludes a full recommendation.
BEETHOVEN: Violin Concerto; MOZART: Violin Concerto No.5 - Wolfgang Schneiderhan/ Berlin Philharmonic Orch./ Eugen Jochum - DG 447403-2
From Deutsche Grammophon's golden age, two excellent recordings in their "Originals" series.
BEETHOVEN: Piano Sonatas No.17 "Tempest", No.21 "Waldstein" & No.28 - Oxana Yablonskaya - ProPiano PPR224516
Spectacularly fine "Pianist's Perspective" recording made in the New York Academy of Arts & Letters on one of ProPiano's own fine Hamburg Steinways. Perhaps recorded a little close for some tastes but staggering, never the less.
BERLIOZ: Symphonie Fantastique/Les Francs-juges - London Classical Players/Roger Norrington - Virgin 5613792
Perhaps not the most exciting performances but the textures of the period instruments are wonderful in these Abbey Road Studio recordings by Mike Clements (aka Mr Bear).
BERNSTEIN: Arias & Barcarolles, etc., - Judy Kaye/William Sharp/ Barrett/Blier - was Koch 37002
An excellent balance between voice and piano is heard in these New York Festival of Song recordings - but no longer available.
BLISS: A Colour Symphony, etc., - BBC National Symphony Orch. of Wales/ Barry Wordsworth - Nimbus NI5294
A splendidly natural orchestral balance and, somewhat unusually for Nimbus, not set in an over-reverberant acoustic.
| BOULEZ:
Repons et dialogue de l'ombre double - Ensemble
Intercontemporain/Pierre Boulez - Deutsche Grammophon 4576052 |
Difficult and challenging music, performed with brilliance, in a recording with wonderfully accurate spacial location of the instruments.
BRAHMS: Piano Concertos No.1 and No.2 - Leon Fleischer, Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell - was Sony Classical MH2K63225
Re-issued in 1999 after 15 years in limbo, these magnificent performances from 1958 and 1962 are revealed in extraordinarliy good sound in these Masterworks Heritage transfers. Unfortunately no longer available.
BRAHMS/WEBER: Clarinet Quintets - Eddie Daniels/Composers' Quartet - Reference RR40CD
Another fine Prof. Johnson recording, made in the Troy Savings Bank Hall, with the celebrated jazz clarinetist in radiant and virtuosic form.
BRAHMS: Violin Sonatas - Nils-Eric Sparf/Elizabeth Westenholz - BIS CD212
The epitome of how to make a good chamber music recording, wonderful performances and Robert von Bahr's simple microphone technique reveals all.
BRITTEN: Noye's Fludde (+ The Golden Vanity) - Owen Brannigan/English Opera Group/Norman del Mar - Decca 4251612
A splendidly natural Kenneth Wilkinson recording from Orford Parish Church.
CHAUSSON: Poeme de l'Amour et de la Mer; RAVEL: Sheherezade; DUPARC: 3 Melodies - Dame Felicity Lott (soprano)/Suisse Romande Orchestra/Armin Jordan - Aeon AECD0314
A magnificent recording from Geneva's Victoria Hall by Jean-Martial Golaz, with Dame Felicity in very fine voice and the terribly under-rated Suisse Romande Orchestra on top form.
COPLAND: Rodeo; Billy the Kid; Fanfare for the Common Man - Dallas Symphony Orch./Donald Johanos - Vox CDX5035
A famous recording with a very detailed sound of the orchestra in a fairly dry acoustic (quite different to the current Myerson Centre).
COPLAND: Old American Songs; 8 Poems of Emily Dickinson; Appalachian Spring; 3 Latin American Sketches; Quiet City; Down a Country Lane - Thomas Hamson (baritone)/ Dawn Upshaw (soprano)/ Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra/ Hugh Wolff - Teldec Ultima 3984281692 (2 discs)
Splendid performances, including the complete chamber version of Appalachian Spring, and an astonishing bargain from Teldec.
| DELIUS: Orchestral Works -
English Northern Sinfonia/David Lloyd-Jones - Naxos 8.553535 ELGAR: Enigma Variations, In the South, Coronation March - Bournemouth Symphony Orch/George Hurst - Naxos 8.553564 |
Although they have divided the critics, we think these to be excellent orchestral recordings by Paul Myers and terrific performances.
ELGAR: Symphony No.1 & No.2, etc., - BBC Symphony Orch./ Andrew Davis - Teldec Ultima 0630189512 (2 discs)
More excellent recordings from Tony Faulkner, although some have found the dynamic range too wide. An astonishing bargain.
ELGAR (elaborated Payne): Symphony No.3 - Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra/Paul Daniel - Naxos 8.554719
Another excellent Tony Faulkner recording of Anthony Payne's controversial realization of Elgar's jottings. Amazing what can be had at Naxos' bargain prices.
ELGAR: Sea Pictures/Dream of Gerontius - Janet Baker/ Richard Lewis/Kim Borg/London Symphony Orch. + Halle Orch./Sir John Barbirolli - EMI 7631852 (2 discs)
A border-line inclusion from a recorded sound point-of-view as it has to be admitted that these Christopher Parker recordings are beginning to show their age, but what performances!
SALUTE TO PERCY GRAINGER: Peter Pears/John Shirley-Quirk/Choirs/English Chamber Orch./Benjamin Britten & Steuart Bedford - Decca Australia Eloquence 4672342
Sadly, and inexplicably, deleted by Decca in the UK, wonderfully natural sound from Kenneth Wilkinson, this time recording at the Maltings, Snape. Just listen to the voices in Shenandoah. This disc offered a very good cross section of Percy Grainger's music and has been rescued by Decca's Australian division.
GREAT ORGAN OF ST EUSTACHE: Jean Guillou - Dorian DOR90134
A floor-shaking recording by Craig Dory of the great showman organist.
GRIEG: Norwegian Dances; Symphonic Dances; Lyric Suite - Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Ole Kristian Ruud - BIS SACD1291 (hybrid SACD/CD)
One of the finest "new" recordings on SACD that we have heard and demonstrates the possibilities of this medium to the full. Excellent performances as well.
HANDEL: Water Music - Philharmonia Baroque/Nicholas McGegan - Harmonia Mundi HMX2907010
A first class recording by Peter McGrath of a small period instrument group giving very engaging performances.
HANDEL: Messiah - Soloists/Monteverdi Choir/English Baroque Soloists/John Elliot Gardiner - Philips 4342972
Still our favourite recording of Messiah with such a natural balance of the voices and spectacularly articulated choral singing.
HOLMBOE: Choral & chamber works/Cello Concerto - Camerata Chamber Choir/Swedish Brass Quintet/Erling Blondal Bengtsson, Danish National Radio Orchestra, Janos Ferencsik - BIS CD78
BIS' Robert von Bahr again offers the epitome of how to record, this time a choir.
HOLST: The Planets (+ ELGAR: Enigma Variations) - London Philharmonic Orch./Sir Adrian Boult - EMI CDM764748-2
A wonderful Christopher Parker recording of The Planets from the Kingsway Hall made in 1978, made originally in conjunction with KEF. It still leaves most of the more recent recordings in the shade.
HOLST: Hammersmith, Moorside, Suites Nos.1&2 - Dallas Symphonic Winds/Dunn - Reference RR39CD
Prof. Johnson again, this time in the Myerson Centre in Dallas.
IVES: Concord Sonata/COPLAND: Piano Sonata - Easley Blackwood - CEDILLE CDR90000005
A superbly natural recording of the piano from WFMT engineer, Bill Maylone, in these challenging works.
KODALY: Hary Janos, Dances of Galanta & Marosszek - London Philharmonic Orch./ Walter Susskind - was EMI CfP CDCFP6029
Another favourite from LP days, recently transferred to CD for the first time but now inexplicably deleted by EMI. The reason for the exceptionally fine sound has now been revealed; Kenneth Wilkinson "moon-lighting" from Decca! Regretably no longer available.
LLOYD: Symphony No.5 - BBC Philharmonic Orch./ George Lloyd - Troy 022-2
Another fine Tony Faulkner recording.
MAHLER: Das Lied von der Erde - Alfreda Hodgson, John Michinson, BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra, Jasch Horenstein - BBC Legends BBCL4042-2
At last the BBC Legends series, which until now had promised so much and delivered so little, comes good with this magnificent release. Those who have possessed the earlier Descant and Music & Arts "off-air" transfers will know that this performance with the wonderful Alfreda Hodgson is without equal, but now they can also discover the excellence of BBC Manchester's studio recording. (Kathleen Ferrier fans - eat your heart out!)
MAHLER: Des Knaben Wunderhorn - Elisabeth Schwarzkopf/Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau/ London Symphony Orch./George Szell - EMI 567236-2
Another classic from EMI in the 1950s, Douglas Larter's very fine recording can sound excellent on a well-balanced audio system, but edgy and hard on one that is not. In it's earlier CDC incarnation it was particularly revealing of different cable types; the first track tells all!
MAHLER: Symphony No.1/Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen - Fischer-Dieskau/Bavarian RSO/Rafael Kubelik - DG 4497352
Another favourite recording from DG's golden age.
MAHLER: Symphony No.2 - Silke Kaiser/Cornelia Kalisch/Geneva Choirs/Suisse Romande Orch./Armin Jordan - was Mediaphon MED72.169 (2 discs)
Another magnificent recording from Geneva's Victoria Hall by Jean-Martial Golaz, with a performance that leaves many more famous recordings in the shade. Unfortunately no longer available.
MAHLER: Symphony No.3 - Norma Procter/London Symphony Orch./ Jascha Horenstein - Unicorn UKCD2006/7 (2 discs) or in Brilliant Classics 99549 (11 disc budget set)
Excellent Bob Auger recording of this classic performance.
MAHLER: Symphony No.3; Kindertotenlieder - Michelle deYoung mezzo, Pacific Boychoir, San Francisco Symphony Chorus and Orchestra, Michael Tilson-Thomas - SFS Media 82193600032 (2 discs - hybrid SACD/CD)
An outstandingly fine addition to the San Francisco Symphony's own label. A magnificent recording by Andreas Neubronner's team makes the most of SACD's potential.
MAHLER: Symphony No.4/Lieder - Elisabeth Schwarzkopf/Philharmonia Orch./ Otto Klemperer - EMI 5670352
An excellent Douglas Larter recording from the early 1960s with Klemperer and the Philharmonia at their best.
MAHLER: Symphony No.4/Adagietto (Sym. 5) - Emmy Loose/Philharmonia Orch./ Paul Kletzki - was Royal DCL706722 (2 discs)
Another excellent Douglas Larter recording this time from the late 1950s (licensed from EMI) with the Philharmonia at their finest. Exquisite wind playing in a disc that eclipses most recent recordings. (Unfortunately, the coupled Symphony No.1 is not its equal as a performance or a recording but the set was very cheap.) Unfortunately, no longer available
MAHLER: Symphony No.6 - London Symphony Orchestra, Mariss Jansons - LSO Live 0038 (2 discs)
Tony Faulkner's recording team seem to have at last got to grips with the dreadful Barbican Hall acoustics and have produced a splendid recording of Jansons' gripping performance. Hopefully a SACD version will become available soon. Earlier recordings in this series have been seriously disappointing - compare the lack-lustre Tony Faulkner recordings of the Elgar Symphonies with Colin Davis in this series with his wonderful recordings for Warner Classics of Andrew Davis' performances - chalk and cheese!
MASSENET: Le Cid/Scenes Pittoresque, etc., - City of Birmingham Symphony Orch./Louis Fremaux - EMI Encore 5758712
Now available on EMI's budget label. Wonderfully natural and dynamic recordings.
MOZART: Sonata K448/SCHUBERT: Fantasia D940 - Murray Perahia/Radu Lupu - Sony SK39511
MUSSORGSKY: Pictures from an Exhibition, etc. - Chicago Symphony Orch./Fritz Reiner - RCA 09026619582
Another excellent Layton Lewis "Living Stereo" recording from the late 1950s.
MUSSORGSKY: Pictures from an Exhibition, etc., - Jean Guillou - Dorian DOR90117
Another organ spectacular recorded by Craig Dory in the Zurich Tonhalle.
PROKOFIEV: Symphony No.5/Lt. Kije, etc., - Boston Symphony Orch./ Erich Leinsdorf - was RCA Navigator 74321212922
Already very fine, we now await a "High Performance" transfer from RCA. Unfortunately no longer available.
PUCCINI: Turandot - Joan Sutherland/Pavarotti/Montserat Caballe/London Philharmonic Orch./Zubin Mehta - Decca 4142742 (2 discs) (Highlights - Decca 4334382)
Kenneth Wilkinson again with one of the finest opera recordings that we know. The end of the first act should undoubtedly make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end!
RACHMANINOV: The 3 Symphonies - Royal Philharmonic Orch./Andrew Litton - Virgin 5620372 (2 discs)
At last reissued in a budget set (but unfortunately with Symphony No.2 split across the two discs).
RACHMANINOV: Piano Concerto No.2; Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini - Werner Haas/ Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra/ Eliahu Inbal - PentaTone PTC5186114 (hybrid SACD/CD)
This small company of ex Philips engineers have consistently issued the most satisfying SACD releases. This re-issue of Philips "quadrophonic" recordings from the 1970s sound particularly fine in stereo and the performances are extraordinarily poetic.
RACHMANINOV: Isle of Dead, Symphonic Dances - Concertgebouw Orch./Vladimir Ashkenasy - Decca 4307332
RAVEL: Piano Concerto; Gaspard de la Nuit; PROKOFIEV: Piano Concerto No.3 - Martha Argerich, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Claudio Abbado - DG Originals 4474382
Magnificent playing by Argerich and the BPO and stunning recording from DG in their "golden age". Try the slow movement of the Ravel Concerto which reveals the artistry of the BPO wind section in all it's glory - knocks spots off any other recording. Must be the 'Originals' transfer though.
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Scheherazade; STRAVINSKY: Song of the Nightingale - Chicago Symphony Orch./Fritz Reiner - RCA 09026681682
More "Living Stereo" from Lewis Layton.
SCHUBERT: Piano Trios - Stuttgart Piano Trio - Naxos 8.550131 & 8.550132
Two very natural chamber music recordings made in Heidelberg by Teije van Geest.
SCHUBERT: Impromptus + HAYDN: Piano Sonatas Hob.XVI: 34, 40, 42 & 52; MOZART: Fantasia K475; SCHUMANN: Fantasiestucke - Alfred Brendel - was Philips 4567272 (2 discs)
Philips recording and Schubert and Haydn playing of the highest order but now astonishingly deleted by Philips.
SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphonies Nos.1/7 - Chicago Symphony Orch./Leonard Bernstein - DG 4276322 (2 discs)
SHOSTAKOVICH: Complete String Quartets - Emerson Quartet - DG4632842 (5 discs)
Recorded by engineer Da-Hong Seetoo at concerts at the Aspen Music Festival in 1999, it is hard to imagine finer-sounding and more alive recordings of the string quartet.
SMETANA & MENDELSSOHN: Piano Trios - Trio Pro Arte - BIS CD97
More masterly chamber music recordings from Robert von Bahr with playing of the highest order.
RICHARD STRAUSS: Also Sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben - Chicago Symphony Orch./Fritz Reiner - RCA 09026614942
More "Living Stereo" from Lewis Layton.
RICHARD STRAUSS: 6 Orchestral Songs, Don Quixote - Dame Felicity Lott (soprano)/ Francois Guye (cello)/ Suisse Romande Orch./ Armin Jordan - was Mediaphon MED72.165
Another fine recording from the Victoria Hall in Geneva by Jean-Martial Golaz. Unfortunately no longer available.
STRAVINSKY: The Rite of Spring; Petrushka; The Firebird; (Orpheus) - Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Sir Colin Davis - Philips 4647442 (2 discs)
Strange that Philips now consider these to be sone of their 50 greatest recordings, considering that they have made them unavailable for the last decade! They still do not acknowledge the engineer but these recordings in the Concertgebouw are stunning and Davis was at his finest with this great orchestra in 1977.
STRAVINSKY: The Firebird, Song of the Nightingale, etc., - London Symphony Orch./Antal Dorati - Mercury 432012-2
More classic "Living Presence" from Robert Fine.
TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No.6; Romeo & Juliet Overture - Kirov Orchestra, Valery Gergiev - Philips 4565802
TCHAIKOVSKY: The Nutcracker - Ballet - Kirov Orchestra, Valery Gergiev - Philips 4621142
Controversial interpretations, but never dull; these discs' star qualities are the recordings, made in 1995 and 1998 respectively, by engineer Thijs Hoekstra with all valve equipment.
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Symphony No.1 "Sea", Symphony No.6, Lark Ascending, Tallis Fantasia - Tasmin Little (violin), Amanda Roocroft (soprano), Thomas Hampson (baritone)/ BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus/ Andrew Davis - Teldec Ultima 8573840702 (2 discs)
More fine Tony Faulkner recordings and another astonishing bargain from Teldec.
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Job; Dives and Lazarus; Tallis Fantasia - London Philharmonic Orch./Vernon Handley - EMI CfP 5753142
Splendid Mike Clements recordings
and a remarkable bargain with very fine perfomances from Handley and the LPO.
VERDI: Rigoletto - Sherill Milnes/Joan Sutherland/Pavarotti/Martti Talvela/London Symphony Orch./Richard Bonynge - Decca 4142692 (2 discs)
Another stunning recording from Kenneth Wilkinson. Old as it is (1971), we can do no better than quote Stereophile: "it has it all; sonics, soundstaging, dynamics and vocal timbre".
WAGNER: Orchestral excerpts from the Ring and Tristan/Siegfried Idyll - National Philharmonic Orch./Charles Gerhardt - Chesky CD161
A late addition to the Chesky catalogue, splendid orchestral recordings made at various London locations between 1985 and 1995 by John Dunkerley, Tryggvi Tryggvason, Tony Faulkner and Mike Ross-Trevor.
WAGNER: Die Walkure - Jon Vickers/Gre Brouwenstijn/Birgit Nilsson/George London/London Symphony Orch./Erich Leinsdorf - Decca 4303912 (3 discs)
Kenneth Wilkinson again, recorded in the spacious acoustic of Walthamstow Town Hall, this is a neglected and underrated treasure by a great Wagnerian cast and conductor.
The French Touch - Dukas: The Sorcerer's Apprentice; Saint-Saens: Omphale's Spinning Wheel; Ravel: Mother Goose; Franck: Le chausseur maudit. - Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Charles Munch - RCA 09026689782
One of the finest yet in RCA's "Living Stereo" series. Lewis Layton's recordings from 1957 to 1962 are absolutely stunning in this transfer to CD and the performances are nothing short of breath-taking.
ENESCU/LISZT/SMETANA/WAGNER: Rhapsodies - RCA Victor Symphony Orch./Leopold Stokowski - RCA 0902661503-2
RCA "Living Stereo" again, at its finest.
SIR ADRIAN BOULT: Concert Favourites - New Symphony Orch. of London/Sir Adrian Boult - Chesky CD53
One of Chesky's many fine "Readers Digest" recordings made by Decca engineers for Charles Gerhardt.
POMP & PIPES: GRAINGER/DUPRE/WILLS, etc., - Dallas Wind Symphony/Frederick Fennell - Reference RR58CD
Prof. Johnson in the Myerson Hall again.
THE MAN WITH THE WOODEN FLUTE: Chris Norman - Dorian DOR90166
Another splendidly natural recording by Craig Dory, made in the Troy Savings Bank Hall.
GREAT EUROPEAN ORGANS NO.26: Graham Barber - Priory PRCD370
One of organ recording specialist, Neil Collier's, best.
CANTATE DOMINO: Oskars Motettkor/Nilsson - Proprius PRCD7762
A long standing classic and one of the best "Christmas" discs.
CAROLS FROM TRINITY: Trinity College Choir/Marlow - was Conifer 75605517542 (2 discs)
Another fine Christmas recording with carols familiar and not so familiar; now sadly unavailable with the demise of the Conifer label following its take over by BMG.
VILLANCICOS: Atrium Musicae de Madrid/Gregorio Paniagua - Harmonia Mundi HMA1901025
Another long standing classic from Harmonia Mundi.
| THE NIGHT WE CALLED IT A
DAY: Carol Kidd - Linn AKHCD007 SOME OTHER TIME: June Tabor - Hannibal HNCD1347 PENGUIN EGGS: Nic Jones - Topic TSCD411 YOU WONT FORGET ME: Shirley Horn - Verve 847482-2 THE TRINITY SESSION: Cowboy Junkies - RCA 7432118356-2 |
Stepping out of our normal classical constraints, in addition to the "Man with the Wooden Flute" we can also recommend these jazz , popular and folk music recordings on a similar basis. And:
RUMOR AND SIGH: Richard Thompson - EMI CDP7957132
Well, we suppose this does have a slight classical connection - Phillip Pickett plays shawm, curtal and crumhorn.
